Sheila Jean Hassell Jewkes

December 4, 1950 — March 13, 2022

Sheila passed away due to COVID pneumonia on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful Utah. She was surrounded by her five children as she lovingly slipped away from this life. Sheila was the oldest daughter of Clayton R. Hassell and the late Barbara Jean Perkins. Born and raised in Ashland, Oregon along with her younger brother and sisters, close to friends and grandparents and cousins. She loved to go boating and camping with her family and friends. She participated in musicals and dance festivals throughout her youth. Sheila took piano lessons for eight years and became a beautifully talented and accomplished pianist. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1969.  In 1970 She moved to Provo Utah to attend BYU. She loved her time there and spoke often about her experiences living in Heritage Halls.

At BYU Sheila met and fell in love with David Jewkes. They were married in the Los Angeles Temple in April of 1972. They lived in Provo Utah, Bakersfield California, Orem Utah, Salt Lake City and in 1985 they moved their family to Bountiful Utah; She remained in Bountiful the rest of her life. Sheila and David were divorced in 1990.

Sheila is the loving mother of 5 children. And adoring grandmother of 23 grandchildren. This past year she became a great-grandmother to Saylor and Luke.

Her favorite place was inside the Bountiful Temple and she spent many hours serving there.  Sheila served in many callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Relief Society teacher, Gospel Doctrine teacher, Young Women President, Ward Chorister, Cub Scout Leader, Activity Days Leader, Primary Counselor, and Primary Pianist. She volunteered at the Church History Museum on Temple Square in 2015-2016. Her favorite calling was as a full-time missionary in the Bentonville Arkansas Mission from January 2017-August 2018.

After her mission Sheila loved working at Bountiful Internal Medicine practice at Lakeview in Bountiful. She also worked for several years in the church Real Estate department. Everyone that met Sheila loved to be around her. She was a beautiful example of Christ-like love and understanding. She made everyone comfortable in her presence and was always cheerful. She will be greatly missed.

Sheila is preceded in death by her mother Barbara Jean and her son-in-law Cory Marc Horton.

She is survived by Her father, Clayton R. Hassell (Judy), brother Clayton David Hassell, sisters Cheryl Hickok (Wayne), LyDean Smith (Curtis), Sharon, Shelly (Paul) and Amanda Rhoades. Daughters Amy Lindsey (Austin), Jill King (Jason), and Jennifer Horton. Sons Troy Paul Jewkes, and Kelly David Jewkes (Stacey).

23 grandchildren: Mason (Kennedy), Jake (Erica), Maegan, Brooke (Keaton), Britney, Kobe, Emma, Kaylee, Devin, Katelyn, T.J., Derek, Pearl, Kelsey, Michael, Violet, Tyreek, Jacee, Alaysha, Mack.

Funeral services will be on Friday, March 18, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the West Bountiful 2nd ward chapel located at 840 North 800 West in West Bountiful, where a viewing will take place from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services.

For those unable to attend in person, services will be streamed live on the Russon Mortuary & Crematory Facebook page and on this obituary page. Streaming will begin 10-15 minutes prior to services and will appear below.
