Shirl H Bunting, 89, friend to all, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2017. He was born June 18, 1927 to Harold Lovett and Clara Squire Bunting in St. George, Utah.
His childhood days were spent in St. George. He spent summers on the Arizona Strip and loved the red rocks of Southern Utah. “You can’t shake the red sand from your shoes."
At age 14, his family moved to Bountiful, Utah, where he graduated from Davis High School. He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, served a mission to the East Central States Mission, attended BYU, U of U, and graduated from Utah State University with a BS in Industrial Engineering. He met his wife, Mona Jean Reese, at a dance at college. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple and began life together in Dayton, Ohio. Shirl worked for Frigidaire. They built a home in Bountiful, Utah, where they lived for 52 years. His wife and children were the light of his life.
Shirl worked over 50 years as a heating/air equipment contractor where he worked as a partner at Thermal Equipment Company. He started his own business, Bunting Company, at an age when most people retire. Customer loyalty and his wife’s management skills combined with his honesty and hard work, made it successful. He found joy in his family, friends, temple work, scouting, gardening, music, and vacations with family to Yellowstone and Canyonlands. His talents and skills included patience, basketball, audio and video recording, woodworking, scouting, fishing, golf, lapidary, faceting, music, and BYU and USU football games.
Shirl was a man of character who loved God and his fellowmen. His word was his bond. He served in many stake and ward callings and service groups. Scouting was an avenue for him to “pay it forward” to build and strengthen young men. He earned the Silver Beaver award from the BSA. His greatest reward was seeing the accomplishments and character development in those he served. He served an LDS mission in Nebraska with his wife. He was a Bountiful Temple worker.
Shirl is survived by his wife, Mona; 5 children: David (Elizabeth), Kaylene (Bruce) Redd, Douglas (Joan), Suzanne Blankinship, Jill (Bryan) Judkins; 23 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; many inlaws, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents and “Big Brother” Eldrid S. Bunting.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, January 14, 2017, at the Bountiful 27th Ward Chapel, 1145 N. 200 E., Bountiful, where a viewing will be held from 9:30-11:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment will follow at Bountiful City Cemetery.
Special thanks for the love and care given at Chancellor Gardens, ComfortWorx Hospice, and Legacy House of Bountiful.
