Shirley Bernice Clayton Lyon finished her mission for her mortal life and peacefully returned to her Heavenly Father on 24 September 2015. She was 88 years old and her spirit is finally free from the bondage the effects old age had crippled her with.
Shirley was born 20 August 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah of goodly parents; Merlin A. Clayton and Bernice Tellefsen. She was raised in a home her father built in Sandy, Utah that was also home to numerous foster children, including Paula, who was always considered her sister through their lives and as an adult was adopted to fulfill that dream. Shirley attended Jordan High School, U of U and graduated from a 3-year Nursing Course . She is a retired Registered Nurse, having worked in her chosen career for over 40 years, in doctors offices, nursing homes, several hospitals, retiring from Cottonwood Hospital after 15 years there.
She married Donald Ray Lyon on 15 July 1949 in Alameda, CA; solemnized in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on 21 May 1958; later divorced. They were blessed with 4 children; Susan (Susi), Dianne, David and Tammy. She served as a career Navy wife while Donald was in the US Navy, living mostly in California before returning to Utah. Mom joked " no military citation given, but richly deserved" were given to her. She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Some of the positions she held were as Primary and Sunday School teachers, Genealogy Committee, Secretary of Stake Genealogy Committee, Relief Society Visiting Teacher, and Nursery Leader.
Survived by daughters and son: Susan Geertson, Dianne Cook, both of Kearns, UT; David (Janene) Lyon of West Jordan, UT and Tammy (David) Harr, of Kearns, UT; 22 grandchildren Heidi (Eric) Olsen, Heather (Sean) Cardwell, Dan Geertsen and April (Alan) Paul, Candace (Brad) Jones, Tiani (Richard) Wekluk, Evelyn (John) Kitchen, Brianna Cook, Keli Cook, Brandon Davis, Joseph Lyon, Chad Lyon, Tommy Lyon, David Harr, Shirley (Anthony) Workman, Thom Harr, Misha (Danny) Morgan, Megan (Josh) Briant, Rachel Harr, Amy Harr, Gianna Harr and Jim Hill; 28 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, sister Paula, much loved cousins, Bill, Bob and Barbara Tellefsen and Dotty Johannsen, all of whom we know were there to greet her as she came home.
Viewing to be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, 1 Oct 2015, at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main St. Bountiful, Ut. Funeral services to be held at 1:30 p.m. on 2 Oct at the LDS Church on 2000 East 3900 South, Salt Lake City, with a viewing one hour prior to service. Internment to follow service at Redwood Memorial Cemetery at 6500 S. Redwood Park, Taylorsville, UT. Shirley had requested donations to American Lung Association in lieu of flowers.
