Shirley Jean Nelson Brown

April 29, 1930 — August 20, 2021

Shirley Brown passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Shirley was born April 29, 1930 in Salina, Utah to Franklin Theodore Nelson and Annetta Christine Willardsen Nelson.

Shirley graduated from Provo High, where she met the love of her life, Grant Lamar Brown. Lamar and Shirley were married on May 23,1951 in Temple, Texas, near Fort Hood, Texas, where Lamar was serving in the US Army. After Lamar’s service they settled in Bountiful, Utah where they had their first child Craig, born in1955, and then welcomed their daughter Vicki in1960.

Shirley had a 50+ year career in the insurance industry. She worked for Farm Bureau Insurance for over 25 years. On Jan 1,1980, Shirley opened Full Service Insurance Agency, which at the time was the only female owned insurance agency in the state of Utah. Shirley had great success building her business and eventually sold her agency to Zion’s Bank. Shirley was well known and respected in the insurance industry receiving many awards for her achievements.

Shirley and Lamar shared a love for golf. They filled their life with treasured memories, traveling and competing in tournaments together and with their friends. Shirley also loved playing team play with the girls during her time at Copper Club and Oakridge Country Club. She built lasting friendships and cherished her times on the course with her friends. Even though she was everyone’s friend, when she stepped up to the first tee, her competitive spirit was on full display. She loved to golf and always tried to improve her game. She was also a great cheerleader for those she played with, enjoying their successes as well. Some of her accomplishments include serving as President of the Ladies Association at both Copper Club and Oakridge Country Club and being Club Champion many times over the years. Shirley was also quite proud of her rare accomplishment of having two “Hole in One” trophies on her mantle.

Shirley was a devoted sports fan, following her favorite teams, the Utah Utes and the Utah Jazz. Shirley would plan her day around when her teams would play on TV. She was very knowledgeable and was happy when anyone would want to talk about the Jazz or the Utes with her. Her family and friends knew that if there was a game on TV, she would be otherwise occupied until the game was final. Sports brought her great joy.

Shirley and Lamar shared 70 wonderful years together. Their adventures included fishing, camping, hunting, dancing, and traveling all over the world. When asked what her favorite qualities about her husband were, she replied, “I love that I can always depend on him. I love his big shoulders, and I love the comfort he gives me. He shows his love every day.”

When it came to Shirley’s family, she loved them with her whole heart. When asked, “Is there a message you would like to share with your family?” she replied, “I couldn’t love you more.”
