Shirley Mae Carter Moss died peacefully in her own home, surrounded by her children, on August 20, 2024. She was born October 15, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to John Groves Carter and Dorothy Marion Bain. After she was about 2, she was raised mostly by her Daddy and her Grandma and later her stepmother Claire. She moved a lot and lived mostly in very small apartments in SLC. They sometimes spent summers in California with her Auntie May. She never had her own room, sharing with her dear sister, Dorothy.
Shirley attended Lafayette Elementary School, Jackson Jr. High, and graduated from West High School, all in SLC.
She didn't learn to drive until she was about 27, married, with 2 kids and another one on the way.
She met Ralph Moss at church and they were married September 7, 1949, in the Salt Lake Temple. There were no relatives that could go with them. They had no reception and spent their honeymoon at home while Ralph played in the all church softball tournament.
Shirley had the distinction of being the first PTA president at Tolman Elementary and advocated for her children's education.
Shirley served faithfully in many church positions; RS president, teacher and counselor, Gospel Doctrine teacher, Primary teacher and counselor, Sunday School teacher/teens, Mutual President, Nursery teacher, Door greeter, Stake Mutual Secretary, Stake Relief Society Board counselor and faithful Visiting Teacher and Ministering Sister.
She and Ralph served in the Salt Lake Temple many years until the Bountiful Temple was built and then many years there as well.
Shirley and Ralph served missions to Nairobi, Kenya, Oakland, California and the church cannery. They also helped fund 9 of their grandchildren’s missions and countless others through the ward mission fund. Missionary and temple service was of great importance to them.
Shirley is survived by 2 sisters, Joan Christensen and Karen Stowell, and 1 brother John Carter, 5 of her 6 children, Dianne (Bruce) Miller, Fred (Deon) Moss, Jim Moss, Richard (Gina) Moss, Kris (Blaine) Smith, and David's wife Karen Fisher, 47 of her 48 grandchildren and 62 great grandchildren.
She was greeted on the other side by dear husband Ralph, her son David, her grandson Shawn, her sister Dorothy, and a multitude of family and friends she has loved and who have loved her.
We will miss her but are so very happy for her. God be with you ‘till we meet again!
