On May 25, 2018 A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend passed away at the age of 93, in Layton, Utah. Shirley was born September 4, 1924, in Scofield, Utah to William Leonard and Leda Miralda Fowles Strang. She was the oldest of 9 children.
Our mother lived a long and happy healthy life. She always commented on how blessed she was to have been so healthy, well into her nineties.
Shirley met, at a school dance, and soon after fell in love, with a handsome young man, Ano John Malaska. They were married June 14, 1941, and later Sealed for Time and for all Eternity, June 14, 1960, in the Salt Lake Temple. They spent 46 wonderful years together, raising their 3 boys, often hunting, fishing, traveling, bowling and as a couple, square dancing, which was the their most cherished activity together. Ano passed away January 8, 1987, leaving Shirley a widow at the age of 62. Shirley was devasted, but turned to her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and her loving family, finding solace, in both. This was the pattern she followed, the remainder of her life. She loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ and lived it faithfully.
She was devoted to her family, and cherished every moment they spent together, especially, her beloved grandchildren, and her littlegreats, that she couldn't get enough of. She could play games, cards, roll dice and never tire of it. She was a most impressive cook. Her family was often the lucky recipients of her many delicious meals, and her amazing pies. Most of our, most treasured recipes came from her. To say Shirley was an avid bowler, was an understatement. Three times a week, until 90 years of age, still bowling scores of 180 or more. She was a member of The Ladies Travel League from 1963- 2003. It was always a fun filled family gathering, when we went bowling with Grams, but she would never relinquish her role as, "Queen of the Lanes" even to the little ones. She was there to beat the pants off of everyone, and we knew it. She found much joy in watching, and cheering on the Jazz. She loved to crochet, having made beautiful afghans, for all her family members, and donating others to Primary Children's Hospital.
We will miss this spunky little lady, that loved us unconditionally, taught with love, and was always a great example to all.
She is survived by her two sons: Kevin (Debbie), Terry (Robin), daughter in law: Lorriane, her 12 grandchildren: Tricia, Lisa, Mark, Jennifer, John, Jessica, Alyson, Mike, Jason, Shannon, Jacob, Ginger, 20 great grandchildren, sister Sue Camomile, and 2 brothers Ronnie and Larry. Preceded in death by her parents, beloved Ano, beloved son Lonnie 2007, 5 brothers and one sister.
Viewing Thursday May 31 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful Utah. Interment will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
