Stacie Leigh Wheeler

Stacie Leigh Smith Wheeler was born September 30,1969 and passed away in the early morning of February 4, 2019.  She was raised in a loving and musical family in Bountiful, Utah.  She began playing piano at age 5 and started the flute at age 10.  The Smith family entertained at many church and social functions and especially enjoyed performing their “Smith Family Song.”

At South Davis Junior High School, Stacie was selected to direct a number with the Utah Symphony and awarded the “Most Talented” certificate for her 9th grade class. She attended Woods Cross High School and played in the award winning marching, symphonic and jazz bands.  As a member of the jazz band she taught herself to play the electric bass, the upright bass and the alto saxophone.  She sang with the madrigals and played the lead role of Peter Pan in the Woods Cross production of “Peter Pan.”  As a senior she was selected as the Music Sterling Scholar for Woods Cross High School. In addition to her musical talents, Stacie was an accomplished soccer player, had an incredible love for the game and played for the Woods Cross High girl’s club team.

Soon after high school she married the love of her life, Scott Wheeler, in the Logan Temple on September 9, 1987.  She tells the funny story that, because it was 3 weeks before her 18th birthday and she was only 17, she had to have her mom officially approve the application for their marriage license.  The couple moved to Logan, Utah to attend Utah State University.  Stacie played in the orchestra, wind ensemble and jazz band at USU.  She also loved playing soccer for USU.  While attending Utah State, Scott and Stacie welcomed their first two sons, Jonathan and Logan, into their family.

Stacie earned a bachelor’s degree in Family and Human Development and Stacie and Scott both graduated from USU in 1992. They built a home in North Logan, Utah where they lived for five years.  During that time they welcomed two more sons, Ryan and Aaron, into their family.  Stacie taught piano and flute lessons to help support the family.  She loved coaching her kids in soccer and heading the recreation soccer program for the Cache Valley Soccer League.

When Scott’s new job brought them to the Salt Lake Valley, they settled in Farmington, Utah.  Stacie continued to teach piano and flute lessons and earned a second bachelor’s degree from USU in Ornamental Horticulture.  She especially loved helping the PTA produce several whole school musical productions at her kids’ elementary school.  During that time they added the last two children, Mason and Katie, to their family.

Most recently Stacie was the musical director for the Farmington City production of “Into the Woods Jr.”  She always loved teaching music to children.  She is now grandmother to four beautiful grandchildren: Grant, Miles, Maci and Riley.

In May of 2017, Stacie was unexpectedly diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.  Throughout the 20 months of her fight with cancer, she continued to live a productive and happy life.  She was honored in September of 2017 by the Hope Box Theatre in Kaysville who dedicated their production of the “Adams Family” to her. Her name plaque is on the “Wall of Hope” in the lobby of the theatre.

Stacie loved The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings during her life.  She had an unwavering testimony of Jesus Christ and her faith in Him carried her through these difficult months. Her greatest joy in life was her marriage to Scott. She would like to thank Scott for his tender care and selfless service throughout her life and especially the last few months. Stacie is survived by her husband, Scott, her six children: Jonathan and Marissa, Logan and Becca, Ryan and Jada, Aaron, Mason and Katie, her grandchildren: Grant, Miles, Maci and Riley, her parents: Kent and Linda Smith, her siblings: Mindy and Shawn Kinder, Jason and Brittney Smith, Tiffany and Chris Nugent, and Tyler and Michelle Smith and her special relatives: Patty Dunlap and Richard Boesiger.

A viewing will be held Friday, February 8th from 6-8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary in Farmington, 1941 North Main St., Farmington, UT.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 9th at 11:00 a.m.at the Farmington South Stake Center, 695 S 200 E. Farmington.  A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Farmington City Cemetery.
