Stanley Smoot peacefully completed his earthly experience at home surrounded by his wife, Mary Ellen, seven children, and grandchildren on January 15, 2012 at the age of 81.
Dear Dad and Grandpa, Thank you for your tireless and enthusiastic support in all our activities and endeavors. Our confidence has soared always knowing you were there as our biggest fan. You saw greatness in us even when we did not see it in ourselves. Your insatiable desire to teach, lift, lead and love has elevated those around you to greater heights. Never was your loving encouragement more evident than in your matchless love and support of our dear mother, your eternal companion. You have always treasured first and foremost being a husband and father. Your hard work and integrity have eased our travels and opened endless doors of opportunity. Your life has been one of cherishing others and we have been the beneficiaries. For us you stood at the crossroads, year after year, child after child, lovingly directing us toward happiness and peace. Thank you for honoring the Lords Holy Priesthood and never wavering, leaving a clear path for us to follow. Born to Edgar Stubbs Smoot and Dora Millard Smoot on September 23, 1930, raised in Centerville, Utah, on Smoot Dairy Farm. Graduated from Davis High School, served an LDS mission in the Hawaiian Islands, Married his high school sweetheart Mary Ellen Wood, He was drafted in to the Korean War and was chosen to play on the Army baseball team. Graduated from the University of Utah where he played and coached baseball. Among his professional accomplishments, he served as Davis County Commissioner, State and National President of the County Officials Association and owned Smoot Real Estate and Development which successfully developed many communities in South Davis County. His community service among others included being a lifelong scouter, serving on the Great Salt Lake Council and being awarded the Silver Beaver. He loved serving in the church and his most recent callings included Stake President, Mission President, Regional Representative, and Director of Church Hosting. Survived by his beloved Mary Ellen Wood Smoot his eternal companion and his seven children Stana (Scott) Kjar, Steven (Kathy) Smoot, Sharman (Laura) Smoot, Shauna (Lester) Essig, Shane (Stacey) Smoot, Scott (Denise) Smoot, Shandell (Heidi) Smoot and 51 wonderful grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren. His siblings Calvin (Jone) Smoot, Caroldyn (Dick) Francs and Doriene (Jim) Knight. Preceded in death by his Parents, Edgar Stubbs and Dora Millard Smoot, his older brother Harold Edgar Smoot, great granddaughter Lily Runyan, great grandson Bennett Scott Wilkinson. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, January 20, 2012 at the Centerville North Stake Center, 1450 North Main, where a viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. and Friday morning 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. prior to services under the direction of Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary. Interment-Centerville City Cemetery.
