Biography

Stephen Alexander Beck, M.D., passed away May 7, 2013, at the age of 66. Stephen was born to Avery and Elvona Beck on December 19, 1946, in Gunnison, Utah. He was a hard working farm boy, excelled at basketball and baseball for Gunnison High and was an honor student. At age 19, he served as a missionary for the LDS church in Calgary, Canada. On June 8, 1968, he married his high school sweetheart, Leslie Jensen, in the Manti, Utah Temple, who has remained his companion and confidant for the last 45 years. Stephen completed undergraduate schooling at Brigham Young University. He graduated from The University of Utah College of Medicine on June 8, 1974, and completed residency at The University of California Davis School of Medicine on June 30, 1977. After completing his training, Stephen and Leslie moved to Bountiful, Utah, where Stephen practiced as a Family Physician for 36 years.
Stephen and Leslie have six children, Bryan (Keen) Beck (Cape Girardeau, MO), JoLynn (Dirk) Slade (St. George, UT), Tim (Jessica) Beck (Seattle, WA), Darren (Krista) Beck (Sandy, UT), David (Jennifer) Beck (Falls Church, VA), and Jaime (Andrew) Vance (Centerville, UT). Stephen’s greatest joy came from spending time with his sweetheart, his children and 22 grandchildren. He loved music, golf, books and to learn something new every day. He taught us how to work hard and to enjoy life. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, doctor, advisor and friend. He touched many lives through his service, thoughtful counsel and generosity. His laugh, which he shared often, was infectious. He is loved by many and will be missed.
Stephen is survived by his wife Leslie, his 6 children, 21 grandchildren, his sister Judy Johnson (Queen Creek, AZ) and brother Sherman Beck (Smithfield, UT). He was preceded in death by his parents, Avery and Elvona Beck, sister Beverley Forrester, brothers Paul and James, and his grandson Jared Vance.
