Sterling Call Dixon

May 24, 1953 — May 24, 2016

Sterling Call Dixon, age 63, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, May 24, 2016. He was born May 24, 1953 in Payson, UT to Douglass Dixon and Beth Call. Sterling was the youngest of six children: Joan, James, Shirley, Elizabeth, and Leslie. As a young boy, Sterling helped his father take care of the family grocery store, Dixon Market, and family ice-cream shop, The Dairy Freeze, where he learned to work and serve others.

Sterling was a firm disciple of Jesus Christ who consecrated his life to the work of the Master. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a full-time missionary in the Ohio-West Virginia Mission. He also served in the Young Men’s Organization, Sunday School, Elder’s Quorum, High Priest’s Group, and most recently in the Primary. Sterling helped build character in young men for over 20 years through his leadership in the Scouting organization and embodied the principles of the Scout Oath, Law, and Motto. He did a good turn daily and quietly helped those in need.

Sterling attended Ricks College, Utah Valley Community College, and graduated from Brigham Young University with a BS in Industrial Education. He spent the beginning of his career as a secondary educator, teaching machine shop, woodworking, motorcycle repair, welding, and advanced electronics. He also coached football and wrestling. He served in the Navy Reserve. Sterling worked at Hill Air Force Base for 31 years as an Equipment Specialist and Program Manager where he received various awards of excellence. His co-workers respected him for his integrity, hard work, attention to detail, and optimistic leadership.

Sterling married the woman of his dreams, Jan Gardner, on August 5, 1983 in the Salt Lake Temple. Sterling and Jan celebrated over 32 years of marriage together and welcomed five children into the world: Greg Sterling, Carl Gardner, Jami, Alan Boyd Douglass, and Kami. In 1987, he built their family home with a hammer and nails. Sterling’s greatest treasures were his wife, children and their spouses, and grandchildren. He enjoyed weekends with his family in the great outdoors – hiking, camping, skiing, motorcycle riding, rock climbing, and hunting. He cared for a beautiful garden and enjoyed teaching his children by doing.

Sterling was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Joan Brockbank. He is survived by his wife Jan and children Greg (Mandy), Kaysville; Carl (Maren), Cottonwood Heights; Jami (Jeff) Hanson, Bluffdale; Alan, St. George; Sister Kami Dixon, Portugal Porto Mission; six grandchildren, mother-in-law, and four siblings.
