Steven Fredrick Bunce

November 4, 1950 — May 27, 2024

Steven Fredrick Bunce, born on November 4, 1950 in East York, Ontario Canada. After a very sudden decline in his health, he passed away peacefully on Memorial Day in his home with his devoted wife and loving family at his side.

His departure comes as a great shock and a deep wound, and it is gravely felt by his entire family and countless others who loved him deeply. Steve was strong willed and stubborn at times, but he showed kindness throughout his life to many people who crossed his path. He was a private man and did not often show nor share his feelings but when he did, his words carried meaning, either good or bad. Steve wanted to be remembered as a fair and honest man with a quick wit, many will attest that he accomplished that goal. Steve sponsored many Vietnamese immigrants and assisted them once they were here in the US and they continue to view him as part of their family.

His love of baseball led him to enjoy coaching a group of young men in Canada for many years and they will forever have lasting memories of their time with Steve. He was so proud of each one of them and shared countless stories of their escapades.

Steve's date of entry to the United States was on February 26, 1995 and he became a naturalized citizen on February 19, 2004.

Steve had a long and successful career in the metals industry. He started in sales with Caparo Tubes in Burlington Ontario Canada and Sonco Steel in Brampton Canada. When he moved to the US he worked for Itsco Steel in Iowa, R&S Steel and other steel companies throughout the US and soon became respected in that industry. He then advanced to a position as sales manager for EXL Tube in Kansas City, Missouri. He served as sales manager for Eppsco Tubular Products in Geneva, Nebraska, General Manager for R&S Steel in Utah. Steve finished his long and rewarding career with Atlas Tube (based out of Chicago, Illinois), the largest independent steel pipe and tube manufacturer in North America and in modular construction innovations for many years and finally retired.

Steve and Carmen met on January 2010 on a dating site, and married on August 13, 2011 (merging a very proper Canadian with a boisterous Guatemalan). Steve sold his home in Lehi and moved to North Salt Lake where they merged all their many belongings. They treasured and enjoyed many years of travel together to different countries. Steve and Carmen's passion for collecting art, antiques, dolls, elephants and many other things made their home seem like a museum. Steve's passion for his beloved Yankees and collecting baseball cards gave him many hours of enjoyment. Perhaps now he will finally meet the Great Bambino, since his extensive baseball card collection includes many Babe Ruth cards.

For most of their married life, Steve was a man of “simple food, mainly fast food” (McDonald's or Atlantis hamburgers, onion rings or french fries and diet coke or peach tea Snapple were his drinks of choice). Once in a while he did enjoy a date night to a fancy restaurant. His favorite phrase was “I resemble that remark” and it was well known among family members that when he wanted to speak at the dinner table he raised his hand to make it known that it was his turn. Steve did not consider himself a scholar but he knew more historical facts and geographical statistics, sports statistics and all kinds of trivia than most. His favorite shows to watch on TV were Pawn Stars, Ancient Aliens, Oak Island and his most favorite was the Antique Roadshow.

Preceded in death by his father, Tom Bunce: mother, Thelma Rose Hunter Bunce; and older brother Tom Earl Bunce.

Steven is survived by his loving partner Carmen Bunce, his son Michael Bunce (Sharon, daughter, Sabine), his daughter Jennifer Bunce Leppard (children, Aiden and Conlan); his step sons: Ryan Borrowman (Stephanie Shaw), Jeffrey Borrowman (Sharla, children Kaleb, Issac, Isabella and Nyah) and Scott Borrowman; his sister Linda Johnson (Ross, son Patrick & wife Christine, daughter Alisa); sister-in-law, Susanne Bunce; niece, Sarah James.

In typical Steve fashion, there are no services planned, certainly no pomp and circumstance. In lieu of flowers please give a donation to your favorite charity. Carmen wishes to thank Rocky Mountain Home Health and Rocky Mountain Hospice for the time and care they gave to Steve and the friendship they formed with these amazing group of people.

“Seeing death as the end of life is like seeing the horizon as the end of the ocean."
