On February 23, 2024, Susan Lynn Hurley White successfully completed her life on earth. Susan’s greatest gift to this life was her kindness. Kindness was central to who she was; it permeated her character and showed in her actions. This trait was expected of her children and required of her husband. She wore kindness in each of her roles as mother, wife, sister, daughter, friend, nurse, and active member of the human family.
Susan was born December 1, 1962, in Salt Lake City. Her youth was spent in Bountiful except for four years during high school when her family moved to Denver. She went to BYU on an academic scholarship and met her husband, Phillip, in the school cafeteria. After graduation, they lived in Princeton NJ, Los Angeles, and the East San Francisco Bay area until she returned to Utah in 1992. She raised her family in Centerville for 17 years before moving to Birmingham AL, for seven years.
Her role as mother was the most important part of her life. She loved each aspect about motherhood. She loved her kids and loved spending time with them. This later translated in her role as “Grammy”. In her 40s, she went back to school and earned a nursing degree from Weber State University. She was passionate about learning and loved being a nurse.
In 2011, she showed the first signs of what later became diagnosed as Alzheimer’s disease. She eventually returned to Utah and took residence at the Heritage Assisted Living facility and Pheasant View Memory Care for the last four years of her life. Susan‘s kindness made her a favorite wherever she went. She attracted people to her throughout her life. This was true at her care centers as she was a favorite of aides and residents with her smile and laughter.
She is survived by her children: Zach (Amber), Blake (Sarah), Kyle (Karisha), and Madeleine, as well as her five grandchildren: Daxton, Amelia, Connor, Luke, and Ronin; her parents, Gary and Pam Hurley; two sisters, Kristen (Ralph) Clegg and Lana (Rex) Heyns; six nieces and nephews; mother-in-law Maxine, brother-in-law Bradley “Jake” (Rebel); and finally her partner and husband of 39 years, Phillip. She is preceded in death by brother-in-law Doug whom she regarded as a son, and father-in-law Phil White.
