Sylvia Carr Tingey

Sylvia Frances Carr Tingey was born November 29, 1914, Bountiful, Utah, the fifth of ten children, to Willard G. and Annie C. Carr. As a child she loved to play with her siblings, dance, sing, and act in plays and musicals. An accomplished musician, Sylvia played several instruments and taught others to play, composed music, often accompanied individuals and groups, and played the organ for LDS church and temple services. Sylvia attended Stoker Elementary, Bountiful Jr., and Davis High School. In 1932 she married William W. Tingey, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they reared ten children. Both she and Bill were devoted to their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Without exception, Sylvia loved each member of this five-generational family, thinking and praying about each individual. Prior to every family reunion, she would spend hours planning and creating mementos for her family members, from knitted teddy bears and blankets to embroidered bags and tatted doilies, all of which were lovingly designed for the particular person. It was her aspiration that every family member felt loved and unique. Sylvia was fun, creative, intelligent, and determined. Those who were around her enjoyed Sylvia?s infectious and illuminating smile, delightful sense of humor, and quick wit. She was proficient in many handicrafts including calligraphy, photography, knitting, sewing, and tatting. She was a smart businesswoman who worked alongside her husband to manage their prosperous farm and other produce businesses. As partners, Sylvia and Bill owned and ran Carr Stationery, a successful office supply and bookstore in Bountiful. Always eager to learn, Sylvia, at the age of seventy, taught herself to use a computer. She loved to study, read, and engage in genealogical research for her family as well as her church. Sylvia loved her Heavenly Father, and her strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been an inspiration to each and every one of us. A life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sylvia demonstrated her testimony in the way she lived her life, reared her family, and treated those around her. She believed in using her talents to serve the Lord and to bless the lives of others. Sylvia is survived by her children Earl C.Joanne Tingey, Don C. Tingey Judith deceased, Sherman N. Kathy Tingey, Nola T. Hatch Noel deceased, Merlyn T. Eugene Roberts deceased Chalo de la Melena, Alice T. Dale Earl, Douglas W. Renee Tingey, Loraine T. Tom Nelson, Mavis T. Bob Green, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William W. Tingey; a son and daughter-in-law, Brent R. Vicki Tingey; her parents; seven brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 17, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the Centerville South Stake Center, 270 North 300 East, Centerville, Utah. Friends may call Sunday, August 16th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, Utah, 801-295-5505, and Monday at the Stake Center from 9:00 am to 10:30 am prior to services. Interment: Centerville City Cemetery.
