Layton, UT – Our cherished husband, father, and grandfather, Thomas W. Hogge, 71, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 as a result of a recent illness.
Tom was born November 10, 1944 in Grand Junction, Colorado, son of Robert Duncan Hogge and Kathryn Arlene Hogge (Artt). He grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado and graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1962. After graduation he went with the Grand Junction Concert Band and Orchestra to the Seattle World's Fair. He received a music scholarship for Mesa College.
In 1963 he left Mesa College to join the Navy. In the Navy he was selected to attend the Naval School of Music in Washington, D.C. While in the Naval School of Music, President Kennedy was assassinated. Tom was selected to hold the Connecticut State Flag in front of the White House while Kennedy was placed in the East Room. He also held the Connecticut Flag the following day for the horse drawn caisson to the US Capital. After Tom completed the Naval School of Music he was sent to Guntanamo Bay, Cuba. He played in the Officers Clubs and E M Clubs under the command of Admiral Buckley. He was also in Cuba when Castro cut off all the water to the base.
After leaving the Navy Tom moved to Pasadena California to attend Pasadena Junior College. Tom marched in the Rose Parade for 2 years. He also played in a rock jazz group. In 1970 Tom moved back to Grand Junction to attend Mesa State College. During his time at Mesa State College he was the President of Mesa College Veterans Club. Tom graduated from Mesa College with a Bachelors degree in 1976. Tom was the first class to graduate from Mesa State after it converted from a Jr. to a four year college.
After college Tom went to work for the government at Collbran Colorado Job Corps and then to Weber Basin Job Corps in Layton, UT. While working for Job Corps he had many assignments, one of his favorites was counseling the youth. Tom retired from Job Corps in 2008.
In 1983 Tom married Linda Schulthies-Berg. They lived in Grand Junction, CO and Layton, UT with their two children Carey Lynn Berg and Lonnie Rendell Berg.
Tom enjoyed traveling, camping, riding his Harley, golfing, spending time with his beloved dogs, and doing family activities. He was very proud of his family, especially his four granddaughters. He always looked forward to spending time and playing with his granddaughters. He was a great inside jungle gym for them.
Tom is survived by his wife of 33 years, Linda Hogge, son Lonnie (Amy) Berg of Clinton, grandchildren Meghan, Rileigh, Emery, and Macie; brother, Jim (Kathryn) Hogge of Grand Junction, CO; sister-in-law Patricia Hogge of Bremerton, WA; brother-in-law Don(Rosanne) Schulthies of Bountiful ; sister-in-law's Debbie (Lee) Kolts of Farmington; Shelley (Craig) Preece of Centerville; Sandra Schulthies of Bountiful; brother-in-law and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Walter Hogge, and daughter Carey Lynn Berg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 7, 2016 at the Bountiful LDS Church, at 4275 Bountiful Blvd, Bountiful, Utah 84010. A viewing for family and friends will be held Sunday November 6, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary at 295 North Main, Bountiful, Utah 84010. There will also be a viewing the day of the funeral from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the Bountiful LDS Church prior to services. Interment-Bountiful City Cemetery.
