Thomas Kent Hogan passed away on February 15, 2019 in Pocatello, Idaho while he was attending a track meet with the Davis High Track team. He was born on May 3, 2001 in Princeton, New Jersey to Steve and Rebecca Rich Hogan.
His first year of life was filled with health struggles as he had open heart surgery at 3 months old and brain surgery at 11 months old. But he was a fighter and through hard work and determination, and dedication on the part of his mother, he was able to overcome his health problems and lead a remarkably full life.
Thomas' first 7 years of life were spent on Roosevelt Island in New York City. He loved riding his bike around the island, participating in soccer, basketball and baseball, and collecting bottle caps. He developed a love for the Knicks that never wained in spite of decades of futility. Just before his 8th birthday his family moved to Utah where they eventually settled in Kaysville.
Thomas was at an exciting time in his life. He had been working hard to prepare to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had submitted his papers 2 days before his death. He also was accepted to BYU with a full tuition scholarship the day of his passing.
Thomas loved life. He loved spending time with his family and had taken his younger siblings sledding on his last Saturday. He and his dad were especially close. They loved going to Jazz games together, making homemade dumplings and cheese cake and backpacking. He loved scouting and earned his eagle scout in January. He participated in Order of the Arrow and worked at a scout camp one summer.
Thomas also loved being a member of the Davis High cross country and track teams. He loved associating with the team members and coaches. One of his high school highlights was being able to accompany the team to Nike Southwest Regionals in Arizona last fall.
Thomas was adventurous. He loved good food and was willing to try anything. Last summer while at Cape Cod he and his dad bought a live lobster, cooked and ate it. When traveling as a family he would help us seek out new types of food. His favorites were xiao long bao and sesame balls.
Everyone knew when Thomas was home because the halls would be filled with his high pitched singing riddled with cracks as he tried to hit the high notes. His laugh was contagious and his dry, clever sense of humor will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Kent Hogan and Dave and Betty Rich, and is survived by his parents Steve and Rebecca Rich Hogan and his five siblings Jacob, Cameron, Anna, William and Kate.
Thomas, our heart is broken to know you won't walk through the door or be at the dinner table anymore. We know Grandpa Rich is taking good care of you and look forward to the day when we will be together again.
