Thomas Lewis Champion

June 2, 1921 — January 6, 2018

Thomas Lewis Champion passed away peacefully at home on January 6, 2018.  He was born June 2, 1921 in Bibb County, Alabama.  He grew up in Shelby County, Alabama, where he was educated.  He graduated from Montevallo High School in Shelby County. He is the son of Walter Monroe and Emma Milissa Mabel (Lawley) Champion.

Tom served in the Army of the United States (Medical Department) in the European Theater for four years, and was honorably discharged March 1, 1946.  He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, and American Service Medal.

Tom was a member of the 34th General Hospital when he met Carolyn Margaret Jensen, while he was training as a surgical technician at Bushnell Hospital in Brigham City, Utah.

He married his “Brigham Peach” on September 27, 1947, after returning home from duty overseas.  They were together for 65 years before Carolyn passed away May 30, 2013.

Tom worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital, as a surgical technician in the operating rooms, retiring after 33 years of service, and was affectionately known at work as “Champ”.

His nephew, Eddye Lawley, and his wife Mimi, who reside in Alabama, survive him, as do numerous other nieces and nephews in Utah and Alabama.

His wife and parents, as well as his four brothers, Reese, Luther, Lucian and Walter, and two sisters, Minnie and Doris preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the LDS Chapel on 1450 South 350 West, Bountiful, Utah.  A viewing will be held from 9:45 -10:45 am, at the church prior to the service. Interment at Bountiful City Cemetery.
