Thomas (Tom) Don Secrist passed away July 7, 2013 peacefully in his home after a short battle with cancer. He was born April 30, 1942 to Grant Secrist and Josephine Zueck Secrist in Salt Lake City, Utah. He grew up as the fourth of five boys in the heart of Bountiful, Utah where his competitive drive was fostered and his unwavering love of baseball, basketball and football forged. His countless childhood adventures will long live within the minds and hearts of his children and grandchildren.
Tom was a proud graduate of Bountiful High class of 1960. He served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York State from 1961 – 1963 and was able to participate in the Hill Cumorah Pageant. Upon returning home, he married Sherri Auernig in the Salt Lake Temple on December 13, 1963 and would have celebrated a 50th Anniversary this year. They are the proud parents of four children: Rick (Elvia), Sally (Valoy), Reed (Cammy) and Ryan (Taani). Tom was extremely proud of all of his children and enjoyed telling anyone who would listen about their accomplishments. His 14 grandchildren were the source of immense pride and the light of his life. His favorite Grandpa responsibility was cheering on grandkids in events or playing ball or games with them at home, thus earning the title “Funpa.”
Tom was actively involved in the community for many years working with the school board and in various political capacities to enact change. He was a natural leader and found his calling coaching hundreds and hundreds of kids for many years in little league programs throughout the community. His no-nonsense approach and commitment to running disciplined teams transformed many young men into great leaders and contributors. Many of his athletes went on to play in college and have become coaches themselves, including two of his sons. His impact was far reaching on and off the field; evidence that he cared deeply for those whom he coached.
Tom will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Sherri, brothers Eugene (Gene) Secrist, Joe Dean (Joe) Secrist, and William (Bill) Secrist. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 3:00 pm at the Kaysville South Stake Center, 900 South Main St., Kaysville, UT. Friends and family may visit prior to the service from 1:00 – 2:45 pm.
