Ursula Wendel

March 6, 1923 — November 25, 2014

“Blessed Honored Pioneer”

Ursula returned to her Heavenly Father with open arms on November 25, 2014.
She was born on March 6, 1923 in Leipzig, Germany. Her family later moved to Berlin where she lived during WWII. As a teenager and young adult, she witnessed the desolation of war. Through her faith and the faith of her family, she experienced many miracles. Her family was preserved through the Hand of the Lord. They were truly “Not Alone”. Ursula was an eye-witness to the Berlin airlift and the famous Candy Bomber. During those years, Ursula worked as a secretary helping to provide for the family.
After the war, Ursula was privileged to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in her homeland. She served in the cities of Kiel and Berlin. Ursula had a great desire to “come to Zion” and receive the blessings of the Temple.
In 1956 she was able to immigrate to Utah with her sister, Karola. Thus, Ursula became the “Pioneer” of our family by coming to the Promised Land.
Upon her arrival in Salt Lake City, she renewed her acquaintance with an Elder Wendel (who had served his mission in Germany before the war) and his younger sister, Pearl, with whom she had been corresponding. This led to the introduction to another member of their family: John.
After a short courtship, Ursula and John were married in the Salt Lake Temple on December 7, 1956. They were blessed with three children. Ursula loved attending the temple and served in many ward and stake callings. She loved doing Family History and serving others. We are thankful for her wonderful example and legacy of faith.
Ursula is survived by her children, Ron (Nora) Layton, Sharon (Ralph) Cutler of Centerville; 13 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Ursula was preceded in death by her husband, John, and son, David.
The Family would like to thank the Rocky Mountain Hospice for their gentle and thoughtful care.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the Lund Lane Chapel, 2260 North Main Street, Centerville, Utah. Viewings will be held Friday evening from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main and Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the church prior to services.
