Velda Harvey Gines

Surrounded by many who loved her, Velda Harvey Gines passed from this life peacefully on January 29, 2018, to join her eternal companion, Roger. 

Velda was born December 29, 1932, to John Francis and Lucile Henderson Harvey in Center Creek, Wasatch County, Utah.  She was the fourth of six children born to John and Lucile.  The daughter of a sheepherder, she grew up in modest, yet loving circumstances.  They always had food on the table and clothes on their back, but not a lot of extra frills.  Because of this, even in better times, Mom was always frugal and wasted nothing, one of the traits that endeared her to the family.  Although she was a very private person and chose not to share a lot about her personal life, she did speak fondly of her happy childhood in Center Creek and Heber, slumber parties at the mortuary in Heber (owned by her friend’s family), summers at the sheep camp, and earning money to buy school clothes by babysitting neighbor children and cleaning houses. 

During her senior year at Wasatch High School in Heber, she was introduced to Roger Gines from Summit County.  They fell in love and married on March 15, 1951, in the Salt Lake Temple.  They shared 59 years together on earth.  Four children were born to them.  Together they created a home where we were taught to work hard, respect property, treat others with respect, and live prudently.  Mom was a gifted homemaker, where orderliness and cleanliness was a top priority.  She also shared her perfectionistic talents by sewing clothes for her family and tying many quilts of all sizes.  Every grandchild could tell you about their favorite blanket made by Grandma Gines. 

Velda had a testimony of her Savior and of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, although she shared it openly only rarely on private occasions.  She faithfully attended the temple as long as she was able and found great peace there.  One of the few things she was open about was her love for her family.  She adored every grandchild and great-grandchild.  Especially in the last few years, they brought her great joy. 

Velda is survived by her four children; Mike (Joan), Joyce (Tony) Price, Marie (Ron) Partridge, and Rex (Natalie), 12 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Evah Horne.  Her husband, Roger, 4 grandsons, and 4 siblings preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at the Mueller Park  4th Ward Chapel, (1320 East 2150 South, Bountiful).  There will be a viewing on Friday, February 2, 2018, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary (295 North Main Street, Bountiful, Utah) and another viewing Saturday, February 3, 2018, from 12:00 noon to 12:45 p.m. at the Mueller Park Chapel prior to funeral services.  Interment will be at Bountiful City Cemetery.
