Verena Hatch

January 29, 1922 — June 29, 2012

Verena Ursenbach Hatch passed away peacefully June 29, 2012 in Sandy, Utah. She was born January 29, 1922, in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada to Octave W. and Jessie Redd Ursenbach. She was the oldest of five children – 3 girls and 2 boys. Verena came to BYU in 1941 and graduated 3 years later with a major in music.
She married M. Ephraim Hatch in the Salt Lake Temple. At the end of World War II, they settled in Provo where they raised three sons and three daughters, all of whom obtained college educations and served L.D.S. missions.
Verena was a supportive wife to her husband through 68 years of marriage as he worked as an electronics technician in the Navy, house builder and BYU employee. She encouraged creativity and hard work in her active children. Neighborhood children loved to play at her home and in her yard. She was a faithful letter writer throughout her life and her letters became an important resource for their 1400 page family history. She was very active in genealogical research and temple work.
She was an accomplished organist and served in the LDS Church all of her life. She was a ward and stake organist and music leader. She served for 10 years in the Provo Temple as organist trainer and supervisor of 90 organists. She wrote an organ course based on the hymns of the Church, which has been sold worldwide. She wrote and published a book titled “Worship and Music.”
In addition to her husband, Verena is survived by her siblings – Wayne Ursenbach, Carmen Rich, Garry Ursenbach and Marilyn Krammer and her children – Guy Hatch, Gary Hatch, Janice Hileman, Brian Hatch, Barbara Ploeger and Joanne English. She has 35 grandchildren and 64 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2012, at the Bountiful Utah North Stake Center, 1540 N 400 E., where a viewing will be held from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be at the Bountiful Cemetery.
