Vilate Sanders Parrish, age 103, passed away peacefully on Dec. 2, 2014. Her life spanned over a century from Horse and Buggy to the Space Age. Vilate was born on December 5, 1911, to Doan Clarence Sanders and Sarah Laurette Burton in her grandparents home in Salt Lake City, Utah. Vilate is preceded in death by her husband Joseph Fernelius Parrish, daughter Joyce Aegerter, son-in-law Richard Aegerter, sister Lucy, brothers Doan Clarence and Edward Burton and Miquette Sanders.
Vilate is survived by her children Kathryn, David, Virginia, Marilyn and their spouses Joel Sperry, Patti Parrish, Bryce Pettey, 21 grandchildren, 70 great grandchildren, 2 great, great, grandchildren, sister Jean Evans (LeGrand) and sister-in-law Carma Sanders.
Vilate was raised in Farmington, Utah. She graduated from Davis High School in 1931, where she loved playing her violin in the school Orchestra. She attended the A.C. (Utah State University) and finished in 1933 with a two year normal certificate in Education. Vilate met her future husband, Joe, while attending the Davis County Club at the A.C. They were married on May 31, 1934, in the Salt Lake Temple.
During Joes career, his work took them to live in Salt Lake, Moab, Nephi, Taylorsville and later on, Bountiful, Utah. Vilate loved reading good literature. Using an oil lamp for light, Vilates mother taught her to read. She passed this love of reading on to her own children, grand and great grandchildren. Vilate was the Plymouth Elementary School librarian for many years. She also worked on the Salt Lake County Bookmobile. Another of Vilates great loves was to crochet and quilt. These skills she also learned from her mother. Vilate was a hostess in the Relief Society Building in Salt Lake City and participated in Spanish name extraction work for eleven years. She and Joe served in both the Salt Lake and Jordan River Temples.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, Bountiful, Utah. A viewing will be held from 1:30 3:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in the Centerville City Cemetery.
