Vince Criddle Hess passed away in his home August 23, 2012 of leukemia. He was born March 1, 1934 in Salt Lake City to Newell Eugene Hess and Alta Marie Criddle. He was a life-long resident of Farmington and rarely thought it necessary to venture far from home.
Vince graduated from Davis High School in 1952 and in 1958 from Brigham Young University with a degree in animal husbandry and a minor in chemistry.
He married Suzanne Leonard on Oct. 2, 1959 in the Salt Lake Temple; together they raised seven sons. Vince built his own home of ‘Farmington rock,’ a reflection of pioneer heritage, where he and Suzanne lived comfortably and enjoyed the association of family and friends. Vince taught his boys, through example, the value of work, integrity and the importance of a job well-done. He farmed – raising livestock feed, alfalfa, corn, grains, and a few cattle. Raising quality crops was very important to him.
Vince especially loved his wife’s homemade bread, bottled fruit, homemade ice cream, Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals and the smell of freshly cut alfalfa.
He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; he served faithfully in many callings including full-time missionary (Northwestern States Mission), bishop’s counselor, stake high councilor and stake patriarch. For nearly two decades Vince and Sue cherished their experiences as they welcomed hundreds of people into their home to receive Patriarchal blessings. He considered it a sacred privilege to associate with others and encourage them to Christ-like lives.
Vince also served as water master of the Haight Bench Irrigation Co., trustee of Benchland Water District, and member of the Farmington Planning Commission.
