Virginia Green Hepworth passed away on 17 July 2015 in Gridley, California. She was born 7 March 1924 to Lott Angus Green and Pearl Louise Green. She and her brother, Angus Gilbert Green, were raised on an 11½ acre farm in Union (Sandy), Salt Lake County, Utah.
A quiet, shy girl, she graduated from Jordan High School in 1942, took the civil-service test and worked as a clerk-typist for Reconstruction Finance Corporation in Salt Lake City, transferring to War Assets Administration as a teletype operator. There she met Donald James Hepworth. They were married, and sealed for time and all eternity, in the Salt Lake Temple 17 June 1947.
Their children, Mary Louise, David James, Alan G, Steven G, and Brent G were raised in Salt Lake City and Bountiful, Utah, and Palo Alto, California. A daughter, Ann, was born while in Palo Alto were Don taught school until he retired in 1983. Empty nesters, they moved back to Utah to live with and care for her mother in her home in Centerville.
A life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she served as a teacher and secretary in both ward and stake Primary organizations in Utah and California. She served in Relief Society Presidencies, both as president and counselor. A 4th generation “Mormon” she joined the Daughters of Utah Pioneers 21 January 1985, and was a docent in the DUP museum.
An interest in bookkeeping developed in high school classes led her to volunteer as treasurer for the Opportunity Center for Handicapped Children in North Salt Lake. She was also treasurer (and cook’s helper) for the Palo Alto Stake Girls’ Camp Program.
Once, in answering a talent survey, she wrote “I dig.” Inheriting a love for gardening, Virginia is now happily digging in a weed/rock-free Heavenly Garden. She and Don are are probably back to vying for the daily cross-word puzzle!
She is survived by her children, Mary (Ken Hunt) of Bountiful UT, David (Julie) of Sandy, UT, Steven (Maggie) of Gridley, CA, Brent of Santee, CA, Ann (Lee Johnson) of Corona, CA, 24 grandchildren and 32+ great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, her son Alan Hepworth, her grandsons Kenneth Ripley and Jarom Weekes, and great-grandson Leo Glende.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, 25 July 2015 at 11:00 at the Canyon Ward building at 160 S. 300 E., Centerville. Interment will be at the Centerville City Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Primary Children’s Hospital.
