Walter Sherman Lundgreen died of angiosarcoma, a rare form of cancer on the 9th of January, 2015 in his Bountiful, Utah home.
Sherm was born 23 March 1927 in Monroe, Sevier, Utah to Walter O. and Savanna Anderson Lundgreen. He was the youngest of four children. In 1941 he moved to Salt Lake with his family. Sherm graduated from West High School. He joined the US Navy in March 1945 where he was a Radar Operator. He served an LDS mission to Denmark from March 1947 until September 1949. In 1949 after he returned from his mission, he met Helen Nebeker who lived in the Beehive House and they were married the next year on 22 December 1950 by Apostle Ezra Taft Benson in the Salt Lake Temple. They recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. He graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Business Marketing in 1954. After his graduation Sherm and Helen purchased a building lot in Bountiful where they built their home and moved in 1955. Sherm worked for Intermountain Concrete Specialties for 36 years, retiring as President in 1987. In 1983 they purchased a townhome in St. George where Sherm and Helen spent their winters.
Sherm was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served as Elder’s Quorum President and Seventy’s President in the South Davis Stake. Later the stake’s name was changed to the Orchard Stake. He was a stake missionary, stake mission president, bishop of the Orchard Ward and a high councilor. He started extracting Scandinavian records for the Family Records Extraction Program in the Orchard Stake in Bountiful. Sherm continued this service in the Val Verda Stake and also in St. George during the winter months until August 2010, until the program was discontinued and the Index program took over. After his retirement Sherm and Helen served a mission together at the St. George Visitors’ Center and Historical Sites.
Sherm enjoyed the outdoors. He spent his retirement years hiking the Southern Utah Mountains and outlying areas with friends and the Outback Hiking Club.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, four sons and one daughter: Kent (Debra) Lundgreen, Providence, Utah; Kurt Lundgreen, Beaumont, Texas; Kim (Mindy) Lundgreen, South Weber, Utah; Bruce (Christine) Lundgreen, Layton, Utah; Karen (Cory) Rushton, Taylorsville, Utah. 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by siblings Judith Lundgreen Nielsen, Wesley Kimball Lundgreen, Verna Geneal Lundgreen Wood.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 17th at the Orchard 1st Ward chapel, 3707 S. 800 W. Bountiful, Utah, where friends may call from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services.. Interment at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
