Walter "Wally" Floyd Cowan

Our darling husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and coach Walter “Wally” Floyd Cowan (58) passed away Friday Nov. 3rd from sudden and unexpected heart failure. He was born October 1, 1959, to Sidney Floyd and Marion Cowan.  He was kind, genuine and funny and always had a twinkle in his eye. Wally is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Wendy; their children, Tanner and McKenzi: his mother, Marion “Mickey” Cowan; his sisters, Colleen (Scott) Walker and Mary Jane (William) McGregor and many nieces and nephews.

Wally grew up in Salt Lake City and had many treasured memories on Hubbard Avenue.  He served as an LDS missionary in the Louisiana, Baton Rouge Mission. He grew up loving University of Utah sports, a love he inherited from his father.  

Wally coached multiple sports during his life. However, baseball became his greatest passion. He loved education. He loved learning and inspiring others to increase their knowledge. Wally graduated from the University of Utah and later received his Master’s degree from the University of Phoenix which lead him to an extended career as a School Guidance Counselor. He taught and/or coached at Skyline High (Salt Lake), Bingham High (South Jordan), East High (Salt Lake City), West Ridge Academy (West Jordan), Matheson Jr. High(Magna), and Cyprus High (Magna). He taught Driver’s Education, Health, P.E. and History.

Wally’s love language was baseball. It was part of his soul and was undoubtedly his life’s calling.  He guided and mentored many young kids. He cared deeply about each of his students. He dedicated countless hours to them. He built a hitting/pitching tunnel in his backyard to accommodate his amazing hands-on teaching style. He wanted each of his students to be the best they could be and knew how to draw it out of them. We all loved this about Wally.

Wally adored his family. Wendy was his angel and love of his life. Wally had many jobs in his life, but his favorite was that of father. He adored his children. He was a devoted and dedicated father and his family was the most important part of his life. His children loved their father with all their hearts. He loved sneaking off with the kids for trips to 7-11, McDonalds or the movies. Wally loved to travel with his family. Some of their favorite vacations were four wheeling in the Utah mountains, relaxing on the California beaches and boating at Lake Powell.  He enjoyed visiting his sister and mother in California. He was always on the hunt for a ballgame to watch and a new hat to buy. 

He leaves a big hole in our hearts.

A viewing will be held Sunday, November 19th from 6-8pm at Russon Mortuary, 295 N Main Street, Bountiful, UT. Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 20th at 1:00 pm at the LDS Stake Center, 1509 West 1500 South, Woods Cross, UT., with a viewing held from 11:45am – 12:45pm. Interment at Bountiful City Cemetery.
