Willard West

Biography

Willard Joseph West was born in Logan, Utah, October 24, 1917 to Ray B. and Mary Morrell West, and died August 3, 2014 in Bountiful, Utah of causes incident to age. He married Joyce Allred on November 19, 1937 in the Logan Utah Temple. They were married 72 years. He graduated Logan High School, and Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State University) with a degree in Bacteriology. He enjoyed a long career in public health service, having been commissioned as an officer in the Regular Corps of the US Public Health Service during World War II. Following the war, he completed more than 30 years of service in the Utah State Health Department. During this time, he and his family lived in locations throughout the state, including Price, Provo, Cedar City, Springville, Logan, and Bountiful. He traveled extensively throughout the state helping agencies to maintain high standards of health in water systems, sewage treatment, restaurants, hotels and motels, school lunch programs, and nursing homes and assisted living centers. While living in Bountiful, he pursued an additional career in real estate, establishing a firm in South Davis County. His interest in real estate spanned the rest of his life, and expanded to include several years in post-retirement in the banking industry. After ten years away from public health service and while working in real estate, he was encouraged once again to return to his health career full-time. He worked in the areas of epidemiology and health planning, eventually becoming the State Director of Hospital Planning and Construction. He also directed several local and regional health planning councils and health departments. Willard served throughout his life in service to his church and community. He was a member of the Rotary Club and served for more than ten years as a justice of the peace. He served as bishop in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a member of several high councils, and in a variety of other callings. He served with his wife as a ward missionary, and for more than 20 years, he and Joyce served as Church Service Missionaries in the Member Location Program in the Church’s Member and Records Department. Willard’s wife, Joyce, preceded him in death, as did his parents, four brothers and a sister. He has three children, fifteen grandchildren, and 48 great-grandchildren, all of whom survive him. His three children are: Joseph (Eileen) West of Bountiful, UT; Mary Ellen West of Las Vegas, NV; and, Richard (Sharon) West of North Logan, UT. Family members would like to express their appreciation to the caring and sensitive staff members of the Inn on Barton Creek where Willard lived for the past three and one-half years, and to South Davis Community Hospital Hospice.
A funeral service will be held in his honor at the Canyon Park Ward, 1190 East Bountiful Hills Drive (approx. 900 South), Bountiful, UT, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2014 with Bishop Cameron Hellewell conducting. There will be a viewing/visitation on Friday, August 8, 2014 from 6 until 8:00 p.m. at the Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, Bountiful, UT and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2014 at the Canyon Park Ward prior to the service. Interment will be at the Logan City Cemetery, 1000 North 1200 East, Logan, UT with services there to begin at 2:45 p.m.
