North Salt Lake, Utah - William David Royall, age 79, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024 at his home, following his battle with cancer. David was born on December 7, 1944 in Charleston, South Carolina and was the second of four children of Paul Fielding and Eula Lee Dean Royall.
David grew up on the west side of Salt Lake City where he attended Riverside Elementary, Jordan Jr. High School, and West High School. He later attended Weber State College. He dedicated a portion of his early adulthood, to serve in the Central States Mission from 1964-1966 for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While he was a patient at LDS Hospital he met Sheila Balmforth. She happened to be his nurse and caregiver—a role she fulfilled throughout his whole life. They were married and sealed in the Salt Lake Temple November 18, 1966 and raised seven children.
David was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held a deep commitment to his faith. He was blessed with the gift to teach. He had a deep love for the scriptures and especially enjoyed teaching the Gospel from them. He had an innate ability to help others feel comfortable in his presentation and help them grow their testimony.
David was a very capable athlete excelling in various sports with a particular love for baseball. In his early adult life he competed in various softball leagues and tournaments where he enjoyed high levels of competition. His love for athletics was passed down to his children and manifested in annual family turkey bowls, summer softball games, and regular games of horse. These experiences helped to strengthen our family bond as we experienced many known and unknown challenges.
Dad’s legacy was his love for his children and grandchildren. Although it was difficult for him to express, he deeply loved them and sought their ultimate happiness and joy.
David is survived by his sons and daughters; Matthew (Teresa), Rachel (Michael) Davidson, Jennifer (David) Petermann, Rebekah Harris, Nathan (Jennifer), Elizabeth (Michael) Hernandez, and Erin (Reed) Carlson along with a legacy of 24 grandchildren and 3 great-grand children. Also survived by his brother Philip (Lauri) Royall and his in-laws: Don Olsen, Joyce Gregory Royall, Teresa (Mickeal) Dahle, Margo (James) Lamoreaux, and Jacquie Balmforth; and many nieces and nephews. David is preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister.
We wish to thank all those who graciously gave of their time and talents to help Dad in his final weeks. He was so grateful to all who had a role in providing care including all nurses, doctors, and family. We are especially grateful to our sister Rebekah for her sacrifice in providing care and attention to Dad since Mom’s passing.
