William Bill Byrne York, 86, passed away on February 21, 2007 in Bountiful, Utah following an illness incident to age. He was born on June 12, 1920 in Heber City, Utah. His parents, Jean Francis Byrne and Lee York preceded him in death. He married Norma Stewart Allen on April 6, 1942. She died on April 25, 1994 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. They are the parents of three children, Dr. William B. York Jr. Suella of San Antonio, TX, Susan Casper Brian of Bountiful, UT and Robert Bob A. York Jenny of Centerville, UT. He later married Joyce Jones of Bountiful, Utah. He is also survived by a step-son, Chris Audree Jones of Bountiful, UT and a sister, Sally Dahlstrom of SLC, UT. He attended South High School in Salt Lake City and the University of Utah, where he earned a degree in engineering. While at the University of Utah, he participated in the ROTC program and subsequently entered the Army as a 2nd Lt. He received extensive combat training prior to landing on Utah Beach, Normandy on D-day. He led a team of 18 men, but only 5 survived the landing. He was with the group that captured Cherbourg and spearheaded the Normandy thrust. He was with the first troops to enter Paris and then on to northern France, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg. He was presented with the Silver Star, earned on D-day for gallantry in action on Utah Beach. He was also presented with the Bronze Star for heroic achievement and an added Oak Leaf Cluster for meritorious service. Following the end of World War II, he joined the Utah National Guard and was activated to full-time service as a Major. He was recognized for exceptionally meritorious service as Chief of the Military Construction Program of the Army in Alaska. Following his Army service, he worked as Chief Industrial Engineer for Kennecott Copper Divisions in Nevada and Utah, Chief Industrial Engineer for Celotex Corporation, and at Hill Air Force Base as Chief Industrial Engineer, Deputy Director of Maintenance and Deputy Director of Procurement and Production. He retired in1980, and then worked for another 10 years as William B. York Consultants in government contracting. He was a member of Rotary International for over 50 years and participated in and contributed to many community activities. He enjoyed playing golf and is a past president of the Oakridge Country Club. Bill lived in Bloomington, St. George UT on until November of 2006, when his health failed. Friends and family may visit on Wednesday morning February 28, 2007 9:00 to 10:45 A.M. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main Street Bountiful, UT. Graveside services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
