Just two weeks shy of his 97th birthday, Willis Lorin Ure passed away due to incidents of old age on January 10, 2019 with his loving family around him.
He was born January 24, 1922 to Thomas Lorin and Beulah May Harris Ure in Bountiful, Utah, the oldest of five children. He was responsible for his siblings at the age of 12, with his father passing away early in life.
He was a veteran of World War II as a Tech Sergeant in the 387th Bomb Group and the 559th Bomb Squadron, flying in 31 missions as a gunner and bombardier on the B-26 Maurader.
He married Wilhelmina (Minnie) Roestenburg on March 21, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple.
He graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelors degree in Engineering. After graduation he worked for his father-in-law until he was hired at Sperry. He worked for the company thru their transition to Unisys and retired from there in 1985.
Will and Minnie adopted their three children, Bernie, Tom, and Cindy and moved to Bountiful in 1961. They were later sealed as a family in the Salt Lake Temple. It was a great blessing in all of their lives. He lived in their family home until he passed.
He had a large heart and a desire to serve others and did so to a fault; helping any time, anywhere. He served as a ward clerk and in the high priest group leadership in his ward.
He spent many hours a day indexing names for genealogy; since 2004, he has indexed over 183,000 names for FamilySearch. When not indexing, he could be found playing his piano. A favorite of his to play was Turkey in the Straw.
In May 2015, Willis was honored to take part in the Honor Flight with his daughter Cindy with other World War II veterans. While there, they were able to enjoy the 70th anniversary of V-E Day. One of the highlights was seeing the B-17, B-24, and P-51’s flying overhead.
Willis is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Doug) Sorenson; daughters in law, Sue (Bernie) Ure and Judy (Tom) Ure; sister Peggy LeGrande; 10 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Blaine; sisters Alice and Lois; both sons and two grandsons.
The viewing will be Thursday, January 17th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main in Bountiful. The funeral will be Friday January 18th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 2633 South 50 West in Bountiful. There will be a viewing that morning from 9:45 to 10:45 with the funeral beginning at 11:00 am. Interment will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Dr Tyler Williams for his many years of caring for Willis. They also wish to thank the other loving caregivers that provided care to Willis in his final weeks.
