Yoneko Asato Sherman

Yoneko was born on November 4, 1936 in Waniya, Okinawa. She was a World War II survivor of the Battle of Okinawa. She endured many hardships in the years to follow as the Okinawans worked to rebuild their island. 

With the US having a strong military presence there, Jim Sherman walked into her life, as he was stationed there in the US Air Force. They fell in love and got married. They started their family there with the birth of their first daughter, Christine. Shortly after, they moved to the United States, got settled and had their second daughter, Tina. 

Jim converted and baptized Yoneko as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They married again in the temple and were all sealed as a family for eternity. 

Yoneko worked for a while in restaurants before finding her way to what she loved, sewing. She worked as a seamstress for many years and retired from Beehive Clothing. Then she put in a few more years serving school lunch at Orchard Elementary.

Yoneko passed peacefully November 18, 2022 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.  Yoneko was an amazing person and was loved by all who knew her. She is survived by the love of her life and husband of 61 years, Jim Sherman. Her daughters, Christine (Randy) Richards, and Tina (Dave) Beavers, 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren with #15 on the way, and 1 great, great grandchild on the way. 

A viewing will be held on Tuesday November 22, 2022 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 N. Main St., Bountiful, UT 84010.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 from 11:00 – 12:00 p.m. with a one hour viewing from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the Orchard 4th Ward Church, 55 E. 350 N., North Salt Lake.

The interment will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday November 25, 2022 at the Riverview Cemetery, 175 E. 1200 S., Tremonton, UT 84337
